Steven’s Story: From a Tent to an Apartment

By Mary Grimm

Steven experienced homelessness for almost four years and bounced around cities trying to find help. He applied for disability but the ongoing stress of being outside made it difficult to follow through with appointments and he was denied. Substance abuse and mental health issues added to the challenge.

Our Street Outreach team started working with Steven in November 2020, when a local church reached out and asked us to help the individuals sleeping in tents on their property. We connected Steven to a Housing Choice Voucher with the Durham Housing Authority and were able to find him a place to live despite his criminal background and lack of income.

Steven is now working on finding part time employment with StepUp, applying for disability with our SOAR Specialist, and actively improving his health. Despite being housed for months, the transition has not been easy. Steven still visits his old campsite weekly to reflect, enjoy the quiet, and connect with nature. He shared how happy he was not having to worry about being outside this winter and is looking forward to the future.
