How to Expand Supportive Housing

HNH Needs Your Help to Expand Supportive Housing

Housing for New Hope currently has an opportunity to expand one of its supportive housing campuses, Carver Creek, to over 100+ units. To do so, we need to come together to tell City Council that we want this opportunity in our community.

Supportive housing is not just affordable housing; it goes beyond a barely reduced market rate to include:
• connection to community agencies that support mental health, physical wellness, employment training, etc.
• dedicated case management, and
• a focus on individuals who have faced long-term homelessness (at least one year of documented homelessness) and who have a disabling condition.
Additionally, participants pay only 30% of their income toward rent.

If this property is not purchased by Housing for New Hope, it will go to a private developer who has no incentive to keep the units affordable or available to our most vulnerable community members.

We need as many people as possible to show support for this project to City Council. Write them an email today! For questions, reach us at [email protected]

Email City Council by May 18th.

Subject: Support Housing for New Hope's Purchase of Additional Units at Carver Creek

Dear Members of the Durham City Council,

I am writing to respectfully request that you vote in favor of supporting Housing for New Hope's (HNH) purchase of additional units and property at Carver Creek. Now is the time for our City Council to show its commitment to addressing homelessness and providing affordable and supportive housing for all residents. As an engaged member of the Durham community, I firmly believe that supporting this initiative is crucial for addressing the growing issue of homelessness and ensuring the availability of affordable and supportive housing for our most vulnerable residents.

If the Carver Creek property is not acquired by Housing for New Hope, it will likely be sold to a private developer who may not prioritize maintaining affordability or the needs of our most vulnerable community members. As evidenced by this year's Point-in-Time count, the number of individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Durham continues to rise - there has been a 300% increase since 2018. By supporting this acquisition by HNH, we have a genuine opportunity to make a meaningful impact on homelessness in Durham.

Because HNH has been at the forefront of the battle against homelessness in Durham for the past 30 years, they have witnessed firsthand the exponential growth of our city and the subsequent loss of true affordable housing. Carver Creek presents a unique opportunity for HNH to expand one of its supportive housing campuses, providing over 100+ units along with a comprehensive range of on-site support services, including mental health support, physical wellness programs, employment training, and dedicated case management.

I trust that you will consider the importance of this initiative and the positive impact it will have on the lives of many Durham residents. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to hearing about your support for this urgent initiative.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
