David’s Story

DavidHousing for New Hope offers an integrated approach to ending homelessness, one that includes assisting with the obtainment of housing, income, and improved health. The multiple needs of the homeless are exemplified by David Smith’s story.

David had no income when he was enrolled by Housing for New Hope in December 2009. He was also sick and separated with his wife, and staying at the local shelter. Housing for New Hope connected him to health care. He underwent several medical treatments, including a surgery procedure that got infected because of his stay at the shelter.

Housing for New Hope helped him find temporary accommodations at a convalescent home. At the same time, Housing for New Hope helped him with his disability application, which was eventually approved. Housing for New Hope then helped him search for a home. He moved in and was reunited with his wife in July, with their rent and other needs being supplemented by Housing for New Hope.

“For the past nine months, my wife and I were only able to spend one weekend together,” David said recently.

“Now, thankfully, we can eat together, sleep together, even argue over what to watch on TV, which we do a bit of. It feels good to be together. If it wasn’t for Housing for New Hope, there is no way we would be where we are today.”
