ABC 11 - Nonprofit helps residents evicted from Durham apts

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Help is being offered to families evicted from a Durham apartment community.
People in more than 150 homes in the Lincoln Apartments were told to move out by the end of October. However, a few stayed behind -- allowed to live there until the end of the year.
Managers for the apartment complex said in September it had to shut down because of financial troubles, but some people left behind say they have nowhere to go, and no way to move.
Luster Edwards is packing up his life. He's lived at the Lincoln Apartments complex for two years, but his time there is up.
"Man, it's been a bunch of chaos," said Edwards. "It's been kind of hard because not knowing how you're going to get help. They didn't give us a little time."
Edwards is hoping to leave by next Wednesday, but he's not sure how.
"I'm frustrated with doing all this moving," he said, "because I ain't getting no help. I'm getting older. And I got to get this mess out of here."
Edwards, however, may finally get some help.
A nonprofit group called 'Housing for New Hope" said it's now working with the city to relocate the remaining residents. The group said it plans to help pay relocations bills, and find moving crews.
Edwards said, so far, he's had no assistance, especially from the city.
"The city is going around getting the trash, and picking up trash cans," he said. "That's all they're doing. They're not doing nothing else. They offer nobody nothing."
Tired and frustrated, Edwards said he's not just moving out, but he's moving on.
